What the World Needs Now is an Enlightened, Benevolent, Dictator

Let’s face it, planet Earth is in crisis. The nations are in turmoil, wars and rumors of wars make daily news headlines, global economies are teetering on the brink of collapse, terrorists are strengthening in the face of passive governments and leaders, and extreme weather patterns are becoming so common that they are almost normal. A majority of human beings have lost any sense of a moral compass and embrace every deviant and godless philosophy and code of behavior, while growing increasingly intolerant of God’s chosen people: Israel and true, biblical Christians. Many people are coming to understand that business as usual cannot be sustained much longer without some serious reforms combine with global cooperation.

Who is able to repair this catastrophic mess? Is any man capable of such an enormous task? There are certainly those who will claim to have such powers. Our current United States president, Barack Obama, ran for office in 2008 claiming grand abilities to reconcile world problems, even predicting that ocean levels would begin to recede as a result of his reforms! Five years later, Obama has not only failed to live up to his own hype, but he is embroiled in numerous scandals even as his own left-wing backers are beginning to turn away from him.

History is replete with men, both good and evil, who thought they had all the answers to the problems of mankind. Most of these were evil and used their power to harm and oppress others. Scripture tells us that the worst oppressor is yet to come. Identified as the “antichrist” (I John 2:18), the “man of sin” and the “son of perdition” (II Thessalonians 2:3), the “Beast” (Revelation 13:1-4) and by several other titles in the prophecies of Daniel, this dictator has been foreshadowed in history by Antiochus IV Epiphanes (who desecrated the Jewish temple about 170 BC) and Adolph Hitler who attempted to exterminate the Jewish race. Like these two madmen, the coming antichrist will focus his demonic attention mainly on the Jews, but the bible tells us that his influence will touch all nations. He will also target the true Church with murderous hatred, causing millions of believers to be martyred during his short reign. (Rev. 7:13-14)

Of course, the antichrist will not emerge on the world stage as a murdering madman, but as a great man with solutions to the global crisis. It is of enormous importance that both the Lord Jesus and the Apostle Paul began discussions about the last days with the admonition to “take heed lest any man deceive you.”

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Beware that no man deceive you. (Mathew 24:3-4)

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition (II Thes. 2:3)

Deception will cover the Earth at the end of this age. Billions of people will be taken captive with lies because they do not know the scriptures. Most will gladly follow someone whom they know nothing about, if that person is a great orator and makes promises that portend hope to humanity. While I do not believe that Obama is the antichrist, he is an example of how quickly the masses of people will turn to follow a charismatic leader who ends up having no substance. In the case of the antichrist, the results will lead to devastation never before experienced. Jesus said that unless his days were cut short, no people would survive. And yet, this wicked man will fool almost everyone when he first appears on the world stage.

The original question stills begs an answer: Who will be able to save mankind from the death spiral of self-destruction we are on? Will any man be able to stand against the coming tide of evil and global violence and restore peace, beauty, and justice to the nations of the Earth? The fate of mans’ survival depends on the answer; if in fact no one can be found having the required gifts, strengths, and wisdom to save the world, then it is almost certain that mankind will not survive the escalating global crises we now face. It is my contention that what the world needs now is a benevolent, enlightened, dictator. Any man or woman not possessing all three of these characteristics will not be able to prevail with the love, the wisdom, and the power to accomplish global restoration. If the term ‘dictator’ throws you off, I ask you to hear me out as we discuss these three attributes of the person who must emerge to save our race and the planet we live on. Let’s look at each of these briefly.

Benevolence means having kindness, compassion, fairness, and generosity; in other words, having great love. A benevolent ruler makes decisions and judgments that protect everyone equally, and is kind and generous with all his resources and power. This leader must possess great love and compassion so that he does good with his power and not evil. Few if any can handle great power without power corrupting them. As Lord Acton observed, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” If we are honest, we must admit that humanity has failed to produce any leader capable of overseeing global restoration with anything approaching pure, selfless love. Love is needed to execute justice for the oppressed, to serve all nations equally, and to cleanse the world from greed and evil.

However, benevolence alone is not enough! It is absolutely crucial that a caring, compassionate ruler also has great wisdom. This person must not be swayed by special interest groups, wealth, or political power. They cannot allow emotionalism, hidden agendas, conflicting religious ideas, or foolish social movements to influence them. A loving leader who lacks wisdom can be disastrous. Former US president Jimmy Carter is an example of this sort of person. Carter genuinely wanted peace, but he was naive and lacked the discernment and astuteness to broker peace deals with the kind of tough love required to protect the security of his own nation. This led to perceived weakness by our enemies that resulted in numerous foreign policy failures. Carter continues to demonstrate his ineptness as a leader by recently calling for decreased sanctions against terrorist countries while making anti-Semitic comments.

Love doesn’t make up for incompetence! The leader I am speaking of must possess great wisdom to solve global problems in a just way that doesn’t allow stronger nations to oppress weaker nations; and where corrupt local leaders aren’t tolerated.

Even supposing we find a person having the requisite benevolence and wisdom, there is still one more attribute that must be in place: Our leader must have absolute authority to carry out the necessary reforms to restore global peace, prosperity, and justice. A leader can have burning love and ultimate wisdom and still not accomplish much if other powers can override the leader’s policies and decisions. The word ‘dictator’ may carry a negative connotation for most of us, and rightly so because up to this point in history one hundred percent of the world’s dictators have been evil. But the term simply means having the ability to dictate what will happen. To save the world, a leader must have ultimate authority. Of course, having absolute authority is a recipe for disaster… unless the one wielding it is equally motivated by love and wisdom. But even the best leader cannot execute the sort of global reforms that are needed in this hour unless he or she has the power to nullify any resistance.

If a ruler lacks any one of these three traits, the whole thing will fail decisively. A dictator without love is ruthless and cruel. Wisdom without authority is powerless. Love without wisdom is foolish. Only a person full of wisdom, possessing a compassionate heart  of love, and having full authority to implement policy while conquering enemies and resistors will be able to accomplish the seemingly impossible task of bringing world peace and global justice to a reality.

If you are feeling rather hopeless at this point, you are not alone. What man could possibly meet these requirements? In the first century, the Apostle John asked this same question during a vision he had on the island of Patmos. John was taken up to Heaven where he beheld unspeakable glory and beauty. There was a throne, and in the right hand of Him that sat on it was a scroll, sealed inside and out with seven seals. This scroll represents the title deed to the earth, and it contains the battle plan to capture all the wicked governments of the earth, and a description of humanity at the end of this age. (Note that the bible does not speak of the end of the world as lost humanity does, but rather about the end of this age and the beginning of a new age.)

A strong angel proclaimed in a loud voice and asked, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose the seals?” And John records:

And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. (Rev. 5:1-5)

Notice that John was filled with despair because no person was found worthy to loose the seals and open the scroll. Loosening the seals and opening the book signifies the authority to execute the contents. Dear reader, no one has ever been found, nor will one ever be found, who qualifies to open that scroll… except One. The man, Jesus Christ, has prevailed to open the scroll. By His obedience, humility, and death he has prevailed over evil and is worthy to take the scroll. Not only does he have the authority, but by taking it from the hand of the Father He also accepts the responsibility to cleanse the earth and rule over it as a man for God. A man, one of us, must rule because in the beginning God gave men dominion over the Earth. Man forfeited his authority to Satan through disobedience, and now a man has prevailed to take that authority back. He is the only one who has ever lived who is able do this with perfect love, fullness of wisdom, and absolute authority. He has already proven during His first coming as a servant that He will perfectly obey the Father, not misuse power, and rule with humility.

And one of the elders said unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. (Rev. 5:5)

Notice the exuberant reaction in Heaven when Jesus takes the title deed and battle plan from the Father:

And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto him that sits upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. (Rev. 5:11-13)

Wow! Heaven explodes with enthusiastic worship! One perfect man has been found who can redeem the earth, and He is willing to take on the task. Notice in these verses that as the host of Heaven declares His praise, they describe seven distinct attributes of His leadership. These are areas that Satan has challenged throughout history, and at the end of this age Jesus will prevail in all of them. A prophetic picture is given showing that every created thing will ultimately bow the knee to this human King and to His Father. Let us look briefly at these attributes.

1. Power
As is made clear in the book of revelation, this refers to political power. The western church sees the power of Jesus as primarily relating to forgiveness of sin, and this is certainly important. However, many Christians relegate Christ’s power to saving them so that they can go to Heaven and walk on streets of gold. Such a view is mostly modern and western and was not taught by the Apostles or held by the early church; the Hebrew mindset focuses on Messiah who will rule over a restored Earth. This is the consistent message of all the Old Testament prophets, and it is illuminated in great detail in the book of Revelation.

And he that overcomes, and keeps my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to pieces: even as I received of my Father. (Rev. 2:26-27)

Many believers are painfully ignorant of God’s end time plan to restore the Earth with Jesus ruling as King from Jerusalem. At His second coming, Jesus will replace all corrupt, wicked leaders of every nation with His own chosen faithful leaders who have proven their own worthiness in this age. Psalm 110:6 speaks of Him filling the places with dead bodies and striking the heads over many countries. Those who are looking for “gentle Jesus meek and mild” are going to be offended when He returns as a conquering king, overthrowing civil governments and establishing justice throughout the nations. Interestingly, Psalm 110:1 is the most quoted Old Testament verse in the New Testament.

The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit down at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool. The Lord at your right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. He shall judge among the nations, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries. (Psalm 110:1, 5-6)

2. Riches

Jesus will oversee the global economy, and His Kingdom will see prosperity throughout the world. No longer will greedy institutions oppress the poor, and crime will cease to be a problem.

3. Wisdom

Jesus will bring every sphere of life into the Father’s plan. His battle plan will save the Earth from the worst crisis in history, and His teachings and laws will bear good fruit forever. He will have the solutions to every problem facing man and earth, including financial, environmental, civil, medical, and governmental issues. Special interest groups with political agendas will no longer control societal and governmental issues. He will teach people how to steward the earth’s resources without worshiping nature or animals.

4. Strength

Having a resurrected body, nothing will be able to withstand Jesus’ leadership. He will never grow tired or get burned out, and those ruling with Him in resurrected bodies will also share in His supernatural life. These will not experience any form of weakness or illness. All the nations of the world will gladly submit their resources to Him.

5. Glory

Under His administration, the Earth will be more beautiful than it has ever been. His Glory will light up the Holy City, and the scripture tells us that the light of the sun will be embarrassed compared to His glory.

And the city (Jerusalem) had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honor into it. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honor of the nations into it. (Rev. 21:23-26)

6. Honor

Jesus will be the most famous, admired, loved, and obeyed man in history. He will be spoken of in every town, every school, every town and village.

And they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. (Heb. 8:11)

7. Blessing

Every nation will agree and cooperate with Jesus’ policies, plans, and leadership. Those who initially resist will be brought into obedience with loving justice. For example, the bible tells us that any nation that refuses to come to Jerusalem to celebrate the annual Feast of Tabernacles will be struck with a drought until they comply. Those who continue to refuse will experience plagues until they submit to the Lord’s command. Jesus always uses the least severe discipline to correct disobedience until we submit to him. But in His coming kingdom, submission will not be optional. This will guarantee world peace as resistors and troublemakers are brought under correction.

And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the Lord will punish the nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. (Zech. 14:16-18)

As you can see from this list of His leadership qualities, Jesus will be the perfect world King- a benevolent, enlightened dictator. No quality will be lacking for Him to implement His plans to restore the Earth and to cleanse it from all evil. This kingdom will last for one thousand years, the Golden Age of world peace. Millions of people have longed for such a time, and many groups have pursued different strategies and followed many philosophies in order to bring about a utopian society. Communists, hippies, authoritarians, anarchists, false religious leaders… all have tried and failed, and will fail. This longing of the human heart for world peace was put there by God, but it will only be in God’s timing and according to God’s plan that it will come to pass.

Sadly, the majority of humanity has rejected God’s chosen King, and this rejection will come to full fruition at the end of this age when wickedness is fully ripe. Psalm 2 chronicles the political drama taking place during the final years of the current age:

Why do the nations rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands apart, and cast away their cords from us.

He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his great displeasure.

“Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, you are my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give you the nations for your inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; thou shall dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” (Psalm 2: 1-9)

Translation: At the end of the age, the nations and peoples of the earth will hate Jesus Christ and His Church. God will laugh at the rebellion of the nations, telling them that it’s too late, He has already anointed His Son to be King, ruling from Jerusalem in the Middle East with absolute authority over the nations.

There is great hope for the earth and for mankind; God Himself became one of us in order to make all right and to rescue us from evil. The Church needs to know and partner with Jesus as His plan unfolds, and all the world desperately needs to accept the free offer of amnesty that was paid for with divine blood. Those who refuse will soon face His extreme displeasure over the rejection of His own Son. Those who accept and stay true to Him until the end of the age will enter the greatest period of peace and blessing of all time.
